Getting energy from waste gas
The clean-tech company SwedishStirling solves the issue of wasted gas by converting residual (left-over) gas into electricity. If they were to implement their innovation everywhere in SouthAfrica, Swedish Stirling would reduce global CO2 emissions by ~0.42%. This is equivalent to the annual electricity use of almost 29 million homes.
Category
The traditional solution in this category is to let the gas go to waste.
Subcategory
No solution can compete with SwedishStirling in this subcategory, as they can double the profit margins of chrome melting and have the highest combination of effect and efficiency.
The ferro chrome industry in South Africa is their primary market, with a market potential valued at more than $1Bn due to the extensive amount of residual gases, expensive electricity bills, and a national requirement to implement energy efficiency measures in all smelters across South Africa.
Swedish Stirling produces electricity cheaper than any other energy source (for as little as 0.21SEK/kWh) with the least CO2 emissions per kWh.
Swedish Stirling’s innovation, PWR BLOKis based on Stirling engines and consists of two cylinders and a container. The two cylinders push the gas into the container while cooling the container from one side and heating it from the opposite side, creating energy from the temperature differential.
One pilot facility is up and running for Samancor Chrome, one of the largest actors in the chrome industry, with a commercial contract for 134 additionalPWR BLOKs. Swedish Stirling signed another commercial contract with Glen-core, one of the most prominent companies in the chrome industry.
The fact that it’s a new technology is the largest obstacle the company faces in introducing PWR BLOKs to a larger audience. Many countries globally, includingSouth Africa, are relatively conservative when it comes to new solutions.
