using salt to store energy
SaltX Technology is a Swedish tech company that offers a scalable cost-effective circular thermochemical energy storage for energy grid providers, industrial, and commercial customers.
If SaltX were chosen as the sole supplier to implement their energy storage solution globally, they could reduce 30% of the CO2 emissions from the industrial sector. That’s equivalent to the annual energy use of almost 360 million homes.
We currently cannot transition to 100% renewable energy without adding a great deal of storage capacity to the grid. This is where SaltX comes in.
Category
The primary players in this category include compressed air energy storage, lithium-ion batteries, flywheel energy storage, and pumped hydroelectric storage.
Subcategory
Companies offering similar solutions to SaltX are using molten salt energy storage, for example. However, the SaltX solution is better due to its much higher density and can store energy for a few
hours or a few months and still keep its efficiency. The process works by separating salt and water, during which time the energy becomes storable (charged). It then releases heat or electricity by merging them again (discharged).
SaltX nano-coated salt comes from their suppliers, Nordkalk and Wacker. SaltX in- vented the materials, which are non-toxic, non-corrosive, scalable, non-flammable, recyclable, and have two times the energy density of molten salt.
SaltX built a facility for Vattenfall in Ber- lin, making them one out of two companies in their category that have managed to scale outside of a lab environment.
SaltX has solutions for three applications: Heat to heat, great for steelworks and factories. Power to steam, for steam production at industries, campuses or in cities. Power to power, works like a large battery powered by heat.
References and partners include Vattenfall, Luleå Energi, LuleKraft Sumitomo SHI FW, Calix Limited, INERCO and Shuang.
