Fabric for zero-waste fashion
Today, the fashion industry is responsible for 8-10% of global GHG emissions. Yet fewer than 1% of old clothes are recycled back into new clothes.
Re:newcell is a Swedish cleantech company specialising in recycling clothes and textiles.
Re:newcell’s innovation is a circular recycling system for fabric production. The resulting fibre, called Circulose, is made out of 100% recycled textiles, by processing them into a dissolving pulp. This dissolving pulp can be used to produce new clothes of the same quality and at the same price point.
According to their own calculations, they could reduce global CO2 emissions by 161 million tons annually if their solution were being used on a larger scale. This is equivalent to the annual CO2 electrical emissions of almost 30 million homes.
Category
Other ways the fashion industry can eliminate waste include making use of dead stock, upcycling, using other types of recycled textiles like recycled cotton and recycled wool, and/or seeking out low-impact textile producers.
Subcategory
Due to the difficulty of separating fibers, blending and other technological challenges, recycled textiles are not yet commonly available. But there are a handful of other competing brands, such as NuCycl, Liva Reviva and Textloop.
Thanks to solutions like Circulose, the fashion industry can eliminate the requirements of harvesting new raw materials to produce high-quality clothing.
Re:newcell’s largest hurdle is that to have a larger impact, people need to start sorting trash (textiles) more efficiently. Starting in 2025, the EU will implement constraints related to having separate collectors for textiles.
