The world’s first closed-loop shower
Swedish cleantech company Orbital Systems has innovated a shower that recycles water in a closed-loop, real-time purification process, saving up to 90% water and 80% energy.
If Orbital Systems were to implement their solution in every shower globally, they could reduce global CO2 emissions by 9,500 tons per 10,000 kWh. This is equivalent to the annual emissions from the electricity consumption of almost 1,800 homes.
Category
Orbital System’s solution prevents the waste of large amounts of water when showering. Alternative ways to solve this problem include encouraging people to turn off the water between soap, sham- poo, and conditioners. Or the installation of low-flow faucets, or nozzles like Altered’s (another company featured on this list).
Subcategory
While we did find one other company in the funding stages (ShowerLoop), Orbital Systems appears to be the only supplier of a commercially produced closed-loop shower system.
Here’s how the system works: water from the shower goes into a specially-made pipe with sensors that review the water quality 20 times per second. The pipe then sends the water into a purification process consisting of a micro-filter that filters larger particles from the water, e.g., skin and hair. Then an ultraviolet light kills harmful germs. Finally, the water flows into a heating process before coming out of the shower head again.
It’s a unique, world-leading technology, but that can also make it difficult to introduce into new markets. More often than not, markets can be conservative or immature, and therefore not ready for new technologies.
Today, both private clients and organisations use Orbital Systems. It’s in use in one of Sweden’s most prominent sports facilities and hotels; Tree Hotel, CreativHotel, and Hotel Guldsmeden Bryggen.
