extracting energy from Exhaust air
Enjay Systems is a Swedish greentech company specialising in recovering waste energy in the restaurant industry, as well as for cruise ships, laundries, and other heavy-duty industries. Once Lepido goes global, their environmental impact could reach 500 megatons CO2 per year, equivalent to the annual electricity use of almost 91 million homes.
Category
Most companies pay no attention to their waste energy. Some attempts are being made to filter out the pollutants in order to recover the energy, but filters need to be changed, making it a significantly less effective- and cost-effective solution.
Subcategory
Because of the challenges involved in filtering out grease and soot from exhaust air in these industries, Enjay Systems has no real competitors. Their patented technology, Lepido, is the only solution of its kind.
Enjay System’s Lepido is a heat exchanger that captures energy from exhaust air, which can then be reused, e.g., for heating or cooling purposes, reducing energy costs and consumption. It can also reduce up to 34 tons CO2 annually per unit, equivalent to 4 homes’ energy consumption for one year.
Lepido is built to withstand grease without the use of filtering techniques, and it is enabled by two patented parts that make it unique.
The biggest hurdle to their success is an established rumor on the market that it is impossible to recover the energy from restaurants, making it difficult for Enjay Systems to shift people’s opinions.
Clients include Burger King, Jureskog, McDonald’s, Berendsen, and Chop- Chop. The latter is a perfect client reference to assist them in changing market perception. ChopChop was using a combo-tech with filters and traditional heat exchangers that failed to succeed. With Lepido, they reduced their costs by over 100,000 SEK after only one year.
Investors include Almi Invest and Philian Invest (Karl-Johan Persson, H&M).
